Economist report on CSR

Corporate social responsibility, once a do-gooding sideshow, is now seen as mainstream. But as yet too few companies are doing it well.

Unethical chicken farming

Last year Hugh went on a chicken mission to expose the welfare conditions of Britain's favourite meat.
Around 850 million chickens are produced each year in the UK, most of them as 'standard' birds, reared in intensive conditions without access to natural light. Believing living, feeling creatures deserve a better life, Hugh set up his own factory farm and took his message to his local community, the poultry industry and the nation's supermarkets.

Primark - unethical company

Over recent years, this topic has come up as ‘the most asked question’ in Business and Economics lessons. Specifically, is it ‘ethical’ to buy low priced goods produced in poor countries? My personal answer is an emphatic ‘yes’. It’s hard to see how our refusal to open some markets to free trade – particularly in agriculture – helps the world’s poor

Panorama puts Primark's claims that it can deliver cheap, fast fashion without breaking ethical guidelines to the test.
Posing as industry buyers in India, the programme's reporter Tom Heap and his team find some of India's poorest people working long, gruelling hours on Primark clothes in slum workshops and refugee camps.

Divine Chocolate - ethical compay

Everything I had read about Divine Chocolate and its inspirational MD Sophi Tranchell suggested that we were in for a treat at the Business Teacher Conference 2008. However, even I was taken by surprise by the sheer energy and passion exuded by Sophi as she got our conference off to a stunning start. Here are a few personal observations and a download link for Sophi’s excellent presentation on Divine Chocolate…

Practical advice on CSR from Business Link

Your business doesn't exist in isolation, simply as a way of making money. Your employees depend on your business. Customers, suppliers and the local community are all affected by you and what you do. Your products, and the way you make them, have an impact on the environment.

The Government's view on CSR

The Government sees CR as the business contribution to our sustainable development goals. Essentially it is about how business takes account of its economic, social and environmental impacts in the way it operates – maximising the benefits and minimising the downsides.

Notes on PEST analysis

PEST analysis is concerned with the environmental influences on a business.

The acronym stands for the Political, Economic, Social and Technological issues that could affect the strategic development of a business.

Identifying PEST influences is a useful way of summarising the external environment in which a business operates. However, it must be followed up by consideration of how a business should respond to these influences.

Business Ethics magazine

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, Business Ethics continues a rich tradition of leading the way with new ideas about business and the intersection of business and society. We’ve left the world of print magazines in favor of an exclusively web-based approach to offering information, opinion and cutting-edge analysis of critical issues in the field of corporate responsibility.
