Q&A: Why is the UK still stuck in recession?


The eurozone has officially left recession now, ending a contraction that began in the second quarter of 2008.France and Germany continued to grow, leading the other countries that use the euro out of recession.

Unemployment in the 16 countries that use the euro hit 10% in November for the first time since the single currency was introduced in 1999.Some 15.7 million people are out of work in the eurozone.

German business confidence has risen to its highest level in 18 months, driven by forecasts of strong exports, according to a key survey.The Ifo Business Climate Index climbed for the 10th month in row from 94.6 in December to 95.8 in January, its highest level since July 2008.

UK economy emerges from recession


The UK economy has come out of recession, after figures showed it had grown by a weaker-than-expected 0.1% in the last three months of 2009.The economy had previously contracted for six consecutive quarters - the longest period since quarterly figures were first recorded in 1955.

US economy in fastest growth rate for six years

The US economy grew by an annualised rate of 5.7% between October and December, official figures have shown. The number, which is a first estimate, is a big rise from the previous quarter's growth rate of 2.2%. It suggests the country's economy is growing at its fastest pace for six years and confirms the US economy has left its year-long recession behind.
